Following weeks of suspense, plots and sabotage, The Celebrity Traitors concludes with a thrilling finale
Spoiler alert - This piece discloses key moments from Celebrity Traitors finale
Throughout the season, viewers witnessed eliminations, betrayals, serious side-eye, and an unforgettable incident that cut through all suspense.
Yet on Thursday night, the final winner of the inaugural Celebrity Traitors was revealed.
From nineteen participants, just a handful were left standing: Deceivers and loyal players competing for the prize.
Before long, the field narrowed to just three: the remaining contestants.
In the end, comedian Alan Carr emerged as the winner, in a surprising result that went viral and left him emotional.
"This has been destroying me, I'm so sorry," he declared, admitting to the remaining faithfuls that he'd always been a traitor. "I feel terrible about this."
"You played amazingly," they consoled him. "It's all right."
Social media quickly erupted with this development. "Most awful traitor ever being the most effective player," commented a viewer.
"It couldn't have been a more iconic ending," wrote a different person, while someone else described it as "the TV moment of the year."
His chosen charity, a cancer charity, gets to keep all the prize money, with the total amount reaching £87,500.
The comedian's evolution from giggle liability to cold-hearted killer was one of the standout highlights of the season.
However, his victory still shocked viewers in shock, according to entertainment reporters.
"The thought of him, among everyone, executing a masterclass in deception felt just as probable as him maintaining a straight face through his comedy routines."
On subsequent discussions, the other contestants summed up the reasons nobody had ever really suspected him.
"He might have appeared to breakfast in a green cloak and I wouldn't have believed he was a traitor. I was too busy laughing," a player said.
"Most people didn't vote for him because how can you vote for someone who is so charming?" asked a different contestant.
The winner stated he had "absolutely loved" his experience with the program.
"I'd like to participate once more... I don't think it would work again!"
The final episode was extended to 70 minutes on television. It had a different start than typical episodes, as all the celebs knew who'd make it at the morning gathering.
Viewers heard particularly inspiring, and atypical for the show music, as the episode revisited some moments from every remaining player's time in the castle.
True to form, the comedian provided unforgettable quotes.
"To be honest, I began the competition a bit of an anxious mess. I've betrayed close allies to save myself, I've murdered beloved figures in plain sight. Apparently I'm more deceptive and player than I believed."
At the same time, a different player noted that reaching the conclusion was "way more stressful than playing for a national team", while another said he was "completely amazed" to have made it so far.
In the beginning of the finale, several players appeared to be attempting to become the new style icon of the competition, taking over from the previously eliminated style leader.
The winner appeared at the morning meal resembling a 1950s US chat show host in patterned burgundy attire, before changing into an embellished light-colored outfit.
However, he got out-jacketted by a fellow player's maroon velvet tuxedo. What a look.
Following this was the competition, with the remaining contestants getting on board a locomotive called - naturally - The Deceivers' Railway.
The challenge involved ripping up portraits of eliminated players. Have sympathy for a player who managed to get hit in the head multiple times by the cover of a heavy wooden box.
Soon after, it was time for the elimination discussion.
Two traitors made a pact beforehand, pledging to stick together. "We've progressed significantly, I won't betray him," said one, while the other just giggled.
However, one did stick to his promise. But, managing to stay unnoticed for the majority of the competition, their partner still got the most votes.
The last deceiver looked like to be experiencing significant distress to be the last traitor standing. "Now I'm on my own, I'm frightened," he said. "I'm unpredictable, a rudderless ship."
Social media and viewers were equally disappointed.
"I did NOT want that player to be banished. A truly loveable traitor," commented a commentator.
"Your legacy will remain in the show's legacy," wrote another user.
However, there remained little opportunity to dwell on this departure. Before long, they were at the final stage - this being what we were really all here for.
The last players stood over the ceremonial fire. And the alliance broke down, just when it mattered the most, in an absolutely shocking development.
A player was eliminated in dramatic fashion - after a shock vote from their partner, who betrayed them.
"It hurts to be betrayed last minute like that," remarked the ousted contestant. Subsequently, it was revealed that when they message, the eliminated contestant refers to the other as a traitor.
Ultimately, just three players remained in the game: the final trio.
A contestant, appearing quite pleased, chose to conclude the game. So did a different player, and everything depended on the final participant, who did the same - resulting in the deceiver emerged victorious.
For observers, the moment where remaining contestants consoled the champion was "beautiful TV". "I predict it could be a contender for memorable moment at next year's awards," they said.
Happily, the winner quickly regained composure from his bout of tears, and could finally appreciate the moment.
"What a rollercoaster. I thought I was terrible at deception, I had no poker face and now I stand the champion," the winner said.
And he even made light of the memorable elimination - his close ally in an early episode - by reaching over the presenter in the final scene and touching her cheek.
"There's something on your face," he said, with his characteristic laugh.
The recent episodes of famous people scheming, scheming and the occasional unexpected moments may feel like one big crazy jumbled dream. But it really did all happen. It will be remembered fondly.
