Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

Gavin Newsom, a prominent member of the Democratic party, has disclosed that he plans to make a decision about whether to launch a presidential campaign in 2028 following the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful if I denied it," Newsom stated when questioned about seriously considering a White House bid post the 2026 elections. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

The governor's tenure as California's leader wraps up in the start of 2027, and he is ineligible for re-election. However, he cautioned that any decision is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he said.

Growing Prominence as a Trump Critic

He has come to the forefront as a prominent opponent of the former president's team, employing his online platforms and advocating for a ballot measure that would increase the party's representation in Congress in as a counter to Republican redistricting efforts. This strategy has made him a target from adversaries.

Controversy Over Funds

Donald Trump's secretary of transportation, Sean Duffy, accused that Newsom shows no concern about the state's residents in a weekend interview on a major news network. The secretary disclosed a strategy to withhold federal funds from the state and warned suspending the state's ability to provide CDLs.

"I plan to withdraw $160m from California," he declared, in the wake of a recently reported tragic collision in the state involving an unauthorized semi truck driver that led to loss of life and casualties.

The governor's team noted that the U.S. government had renewed the worker's status on several occasions, which permitted him to obtain a commercial driver's license under U.S. law.

Duffy had earlier indicated he was withholding additional funds from California for not enforcing linguistic standards for commercial drivers.

Pointed Reply from the Governor's Office

"Former D-list reality star, now Secretary of Transportation, continues to misunderstand national statutes," the governor's team responded in a last month's comment countering the secretary's comments. "Meanwhile, as opposed to this individual, we'll stick to the facts: The state's CDL holders had a fatal crash rate nearly 40% lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with more commercial holders – has a rate markedly elevated than the state. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Voter Sentiment and Political Future

A recently conducted survey revealed that 72% of Democrats and a significant portion of the electorate believed that the governor ought to campaign for the White House in the next election cycle. After the current administration began, public support for the governor has increased to an typical level of a third from approximately 30%, while his disapproval has decreased from an mean of previous highs to under 40%.

Earlier this year, the governor remarked while visiting several key regions that he had "no clue" about his future for 2028.

He also referenced his personal struggles, including being identified as dyslexic at the early childhood.

"The thought that a guy who scored 960 on the SAT, who continues to find reading challenging, who was typically not at the front – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, extraordinary," he commented. "Who the hell knows? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who meets that moment. And that's the question for the voters."
