Larry Summers Resigns from OpenAI Board
Ex-Treasury chief the Harvard professor is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just several days after a series of emails between him and notorious criminal Jeffrey Epstein became public.
The economist commented in an announcement that he was "grateful for the opportunity to have participated, enthusiastic about the promise of the company, and anticipate following their development".
The prominent academic, who previously led Harvard University, declared on recently that he would be stepping back from public commitments due to his relationship with the convicted sex offender.
Email Communications
The recently released emails showed that the official exchanged messages with Jeffrey Epstein until the day before Epstein's 2019 detention for suspected sex trafficking of young people.
In another announcement, the technology organization said it respected the economist's choice to step down.
"We appreciate his numerous inputs and the perspective he provided to the governing body," the company commented.
Political Context
This news follows after the two houses of the legislative branch voted on Tuesday to endorse a measure that would require the Department of Justice to disclose its files on Epstein.
The bill will then head to the administration of US President Donald Trump for signature. Trump has stated he plans to endorse the bill, after changing his stance on the issue following objections from his base.
Correspondence Findings
A group of Epstein-related emails disclosed by the legislative panel last week included multiple high-profile figures in the Epstein's previous network, without indicating any criminal activity by those figures.
The communications showed that Summers and Epstein dined together frequently, with Epstein often attempting to link the official to notable world leaders.
Personal Response
After the messages were made available with the general audience, the former official said he assumed "full responsibility for my misguided judgment to continue interacting with Jeffrey Epstein".
He added that he desired "to rebuild confidence and fix relationships with the people nearest to me".
Previous Positions
The professor held leadership roles under Democratic administrations; functioning as Treasury chief under Bill Clinton, and as head of the economic advisory body under Barack Obama.
He headed Harvard from five years and remains a professor there. When stating his withdrawal from public roles recently on Monday, he said he would maintain his teaching commitments.
Additional Consequences
Following his announcement on earlier this week, the Center for American Progress, a left-leaning policy institute in the capital where the professor was a senior fellow, announced that Summers was no longer connected with the organization.
He became part of the leadership of the AI company, which makes the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a defeated move to remove its chief executive Sam Altman.
