The 'Breaking Bad' Creator Discloses He Has an Idea of How His Sci-Fi Series Will End... Currently.
The acclaimed writer-producer did not foresee that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I was surprised by the show being as talked about as it is, and it makes me deliriously happy.”
With the first season of the acclaimed program coming to an end—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—Gilligan and his team reflected on the viewer reception and whether it will shape the future direction of Pluribus.
On the Incredible Fan Response
Anyone might to get distracted by the widespread acclaim and audience predictions surrounding Pluribus. He is doing his best to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's wonderful, but I get wind of it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never searched for my own name online, nor do I ever plan to. It's quite the opposite. It's a deep trap I know I would get lost in and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s it's impossible to ignore the immensely favorable response to the series. The best he and his team can do is to acknowledge it humbly and try not to let it influence the direction of the show.
“We make no attempt to change the plot,” says Alison Tatlock. “Our storytelling is not impacted by audience chatter.”
“Better to keep our noses to the grindstone,” he chimes in.
The Big Question: Does the creator Know the Conclusion of Pluribus?
So if the creative staff aren’t being guided by audience theories, can we assume they have already decided how Pluribus will finally conclude? The answer is yes… sort of.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about the ultimate destination,” he states. “yet we stand ready to discard a solid concept for a better idea. That has held us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We throw stuff out when we get a better idea and I suspect we'll be doing that.”
Alternatively, if plans fall through, executive producer Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to serve as a last resort.
“I keep pitching that it's all in a snow globe, and that we'll reveal the snow globe and the characters are inside it,” Smith jokes, “but nobody's taking me up on that.”
Then again, why not reference the iconic TV endings?
“I want Carol to open her eyes beside Bob Newhart,” Gilligan says with a smile.
Pluribus is currently available on Apple TV.
