For much of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped inside a mental fortress forged from the memories of the villain Henry. Their mission for freedom in episode 6 forces them to witness again a defining event from Henry's childhood—an event that potentially carries the means to overcome him for good.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

When she finds Max in the mental landscape dubbed Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. A clever observation a spyglass taken from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies beyond the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.

There, they witness a child version of Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, striking Henry in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. It was a factor, but the act involved more than a fight for life.

A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm known as the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the only one to return was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an entirely new blood.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. One of his scientists pilfered lab samples to sell to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. This spy in the cavern is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Given what is revealed about his research, the briefcase would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon opening the case, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—powers he would later pass on to the test subjects in Hawkins Lab.

Alternatively, the box could have held dark matter that later made its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The stage play explains that young Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later as a different person. Throughout the play, he fights the control of a dark entity, reminiscent of how the character Will was influenced by the entity in an earlier season.

A Weaponized Emotion

His lasting fear linked to that memory demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the narrative points to a showdown between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to fortify himself.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. More importantly, Will now knows what the monster's own weakness, which could provide a decisive edge in the endgame conflict that awaits.
