The Young Spinner Makes Surprise Inclusion in English Test Series Squad
England have chosen a 12-man selection just two days ahead of the first Ashes Test, with the 22-year-old spinner earning a surprise spot.
Bashir's selection indicates that the visiting team will delay until the day of the first Test to determine whether Perth Stadium pitch favor four seamers or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Jofra Archer and Mark Wood are included in the selected group, indicating there are no concerns about either fast bowler's condition.
Gus Atkinson and Brydon Carse complete the bowling group, with the latter most likely to be omitted if the spinner makes the final team.
Pitch Factors Favor Seamers
Brendon McCullum had been expected to choose an pace-only lineup on a venue that has hosted five previous Tests.
During these games, the majority of dismissals have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Of those spin dismissals, the veteran spinner has taken the bulk, while overseas slow bowlers combined have only eight.
At a venue renowned for its speed and carry, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a team relying on seamers is still the more likely choice.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been speculation that Will Jacks could be brought into the side to provide some spin while additionally strengthening the batting lineup.
But McCullum has chosen to stick with the young spinner, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the Ashes.
Earlier, Lyon described Bashir as “decent,” saying that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still England’s top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for people who lack experience in the previous in Australian pitches,” Lyon remarked of spin bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't reveal my strategies so opponents come out and excel out here.”
